Aquinasā tradition of service in the Appalachia region, traced back as far as the
collegeās first President, Monsignor Bukowski, is continuing this year as students
get ready to depart to eastern Kentucky. This Spring Break service week, done through
the Christian Appalachian Project, gives students the opportunity to provide physical,
spiritual and emotional support for those in need.
āIn Appalachia, students serve in rural areas located near the foothills of the Appalachian
mountains,ā said Eric Bridge, Coordinator of Service Learning. āThe richness and diversity
of the Appalachian people allows 91³Ō¹Ļ students to experience presentations by artists
and concerts by musicians.ā
Aquinas students will be joined by groups from other schools, such as MSU and University
of Connecticut where they will work together with area residents in home renovation
and other services. Students will also be given the opportunity to explore their faith
and service through evening reflection periods.
āI am super excited for this trip, and I know that all the other participants are
as well,ā said 91³Ō¹Ļ sophomore and student leader George Van Den Driessche. āWe look
forward to going down to Kentucky, creating some terrific memories, and a good sweat.ā
